Trumpocalypse Now: His Finest Moments So Far

As the US election draws to a close, here’s a quick look at Donald Trump’s most glorious moments in the media this year.

If there’s one phenomenon that has defined 2016, it’s Donald Trump. Republican Party nominee for the 2016 US Presidential Elections, he is anything but dull. Solely dominating Western media for almost a year now, Trump is many things – racist demagogue, tax-evading shady businessman, overt misogynist, and an endless source of social media punchlines. As the election draws to a close this November, let’s have a quick look at Trump’s lowest moments and the glorious media take down of the politically incorrect megalomaniac.

When Trump built his imaginary wall

He announced his presidential run and called Mexicans rapists . All in one day. He further pronounced his plan to keep illegal immigrants out by building a wall along the US-Mexico border and make Mexico pay for it.

They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

“I would build a great wall..And I will have Mexico pay for that wall.

Yet, this was just the beginning.

Stephen Colbert and Gael Garcia Bernal’s hilarious takedown of Trump on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , where Bernal portrays a Hispanic-Canadian building a wall to keep out Americans desperate to flee a Trump presidency (although it comes many months after the actual speech)

When Trump defended his nasty comments about women.. by being nasty to women

When asked by Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly to clarify his views on women (whom he had earlier referred to as “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals”, as pointed out by Kelly) at the Republican Primary Debate, Trump responded by dismissing the notion of political correctness as a “problem” that the U.S does not have time for. Later, in an interview with CNN, Trump attacked Megyn Kelly, implying that she was unfit for a balanced argument by saying this :

There was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.

In the wake of a massive outrage from all quarters, Trump tried to clarify his stance by stressing that by ‘wherever’ he meant nose and anyone thinking otherwise was a ‘deviant’. The media was not going to let him off easy as this hilarious Jimmy Fallon spoof proves.

When Trump was plain racist

In June 2016,  Trump laid to rest any lingering doubt about him being a racist by claiming that a federal judge could not do his job fairly because of his ethnicity. He questioned the US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s ethics as a judge presiding over lawsuits against Trump University because of his Mexican lineage and complained that he was not being given ‘a fair ruling’ because of Curiel’s “inherent conflict of interest” with Trump. Even when pointed out by CNN’s Jake Tapper, that Curiel is not from Mexico, but from the state of Indiana, Trump refused to retract his views. Republican leaders responded strongly against his statement, which was labelled “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump’s record of racism (he has been sued by the Justice Department in 1973 for discriminating against African Americans ; he has failed to disavow the support of David Duke, the former KKK Imperial wizard) was cleverly pointed out by The Late Show host,Stephen Colbert. [1.15 onwards]

When Trump mocked a differently-abled reporter

While trying to defend his claim that he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrate 9/11, Trump mocked Serge Kovaleski, a New York Times reporter who suffers from a congenital joint condition called arthrogryposis. Predictably, his aforementioned claim has also been debunked by a number of sources, including the police.

Just when you think he could not go any lower.

When Trump called for Hillary Clinton’s assassination

At a North Carolina rally, while referring to Hillary Clinton’s stance on gun control, Trump hinted what can possibly be interpreted as a call for arms against his arch rival. His exact words –

If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the second amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what, that will be a horrible day.”

The Second Amendment ensures the people’s rights to carrying firearms. You can join the dots yourself.

Social media reacted with shock, since a death threat from a Presidential candidate to another is unheard of. The best response is by Trevor Noah of The Daily Show, who, like the rest of us, tried his best to figure out what Trump really meant.

When Trump almost banned ALL Muslims from USA

In the aftermath of the shooting at San Bernardino,California Trump  called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,” based on his belief that Muslims harboured a deep hatred towards America. In one fell swoop he managed to dismiss the patriotism, devotion and the services of millions of Muslim-Americans who have been living in the U.S. for years.

He was given a fitting reply by Khizr Khan, father of a fallen Muslim-American soldier at the DNC. Instead of an apology Trump sought to target their religion indirectly, pointing to the fact that Khizr Khan’s wife stood silently by her husband. Later, it was clarified that the bereaved mother finds it difficult to speak when her son is mentioned. Trump was properly put in his place by Seth Meyer and John Oliver [watch from 4.11]

When Trump entered the locker room

Trump’s biggest scandal came on the shoulders of a 2005 clip uncovered by The Washington Post which shows him making disgusting comments about women and bragging about sexual assault. While social media across the world erupted in outrage,Trump came up with a half-hearted apology going along the lines of what we Indians have been hearing for years  –  that boys will be boys and it was a mere locker-room talk.

Although Saturday Night Live found the perfect context for a funny skit , the best response to the misogynist came from the First Lady of United States, who perfectly summarized what everyone was thinking.

“If all of this is painful to us as grown women, what do you think this is doing to our children? What message are our little girls hearing about who they should look like, how they should act? What lessons are they learning about their value as professionals, as human beings, about their dreams and aspirations? And how is this affecting men and boys in this country? Because I can tell you that the men in my life do not talk about women like this. And I know that my family is not unusual. And to dismiss this as everyday locker-room talk is an insult to decent men everywhere.” [For the full transcript, see this. ]

Since then, numerous women have accused Trump of sexual assault, including a victim of child rape.

Not just on social media though, people (and birds) all over have trumping Trump. We’re not kidding. Here’s Exhibit A : When a bald eagle (the national bird of USA) attacked Trump.

Oh, and here’s a Halloween special! A history professor (who does not support Trump) spooked all by decorating his house in the image of Trump’s supposed border wall, replete with barbed wire, border signs and a Trump tower.

Trump’s gaffes (if they can be called gaffes) are far too many to list. But at the end of more than a year of campaigning, we must thank him, I suppose, for the plethora of memes, gifs and jokes and a more realistic idea of what Voldemort would really be like.

Finally, all the best, America. May better sense prevail !
