Strapped For Time? Try Breakfast in a Glass!

We all know the importance of getting in something healthy into our tummies first thing in the morning, it’s often what helps us get a good start to the day.

Studies have shown that having a balanced breakfast saves us from several horrors, including obesity and ill-timed blackouts in the summers. It has also been associated with higher concentration and better memory. But how many of us actually take the time out to tuck in a decent breakfast?

Whether working out of an office or freelancing from home, all of us encounter days where we want to hit the snooze button more than usual, thus, giving away our breakfast time to morning dreams.

But there’s good news! While you may ignore that plate full of essential goodies due to lack of time, the answer could be right there before you… in a glass. It may not have caught on here as extensively as it has in the West, but breakfast in a glass is the newest cure to our rushed mornings.

Dimple Bhavsagar, a 24-year-old sub-editor based in Mumbai says, “I don’t know about other fields, but in the media, it is impossible to toss up a good breakfast and have ten minutes of solitude to actually  relish it. I practically have no time and my work keep me on my toes, often making me drop everything else, even my breakfast. So, my mom came up with this new thing where she puts a plate full of fruits into a mixer and pours it in a glass. It feels really doable since it’s just one glass of ‘something’ and I can finish it even while waiting for the lift.”

Smoothies, it would seem, are the new morning meal, a way to fill that space which awaits us at the breakfast table.

Raksha Changappa, a dietician-cum-nutritionist from Bangalore tells us, “I hear this quite often from my clients that they don’t have time for breakfast, and if there are any easy recipes that would sort them out in a minute or two. And I could only think of blending everything and drinking it. I would say have it in any form, solid, liquid, semi-solid; it doesn’t matter, but don’t skip breakfast.”

Smoothies are an excellent way to get your daily dose of nutrients, much like gulping down a glass full of energy to keep you going through the day. You can make them out of ingredients you normally have around the house: fruits, veggies, milk, yoghurt, nuts, seeds, herbs, and whatever else catches your fancy. Most importantly, it takes very little time to prepare, so you don’t have to sacrifice any sleep.

For now, we have this easy recipe that takes less than 5 minutes to whip up, and we suspect, even less time to gulp down. Mix oatmeal with bananas, raisins, dried mango, flax seeds and a small pinch of cinnamon or cloves along with cocoa powder (if you like the taste of chocolate in the morning) in a blender, and drink it while it’s still fresh.
