Our generation is so full of contradictions, isn’t it? We want to multitask and conquer the world, but we feel lazy and tired at the same time. This hot and cold feeling is a direct result of our unhealthy lifestyles. Now, we’re not about to get preachy and ask you to start having green tea or hit the gym. Being healthy is not a task — it should, in fact, be part of your daily routine.
So this New Year, try and incorporate these 10 healthy habits into your life. They’re so easy to follow, you’ll actually want to live by them!
1. Drink Water in Copper Vessels
Didn’t grandma tell you so? Using copper vessels is not just an age-old fad; there’s science behind it.
Drinking water that’s been stored in a copper bottle or a copper glass proves to be an antioxidant for the body. As per Ayurveda, its positive charge balances out our doshas (vata, kapha and pitta).
So all you gotta do is swap your plastic bottles for copper ones. This is great for the environment too!
Note: Copper vessels must be washed with salt and lemon juice/vinegar.
2. Trick Yourself into Having More Fruit
Hate plain fruit? Here’s a hack: add a few slices of orange, sweet lime, or strawberry to the water bottle you carry to work. This way, you’ll have mildly flavoured fruit water that’s healthy and yum, and you’ll get your vitamin fix too.
3. Let Music Heal
One of the easiest and quickest ways to de-stress is to play soft, soothing music on your phone. Music can be meditative and it also helps relieve stress and gain concentration. So play your favourite song and lie down. That’s all!
4. Love Thy Pet
Several studies have confirmed that pets have the power to reduce anxiety, depression and stress in their human parents. Dogs, in particular, help to relieve mental stress and can also detect illnesses like diabetes in humans. Go on, cuddle those furballs!
5. Wine It Up
It can’t get easier than this, right? Studies have proved that red wine (when consumed in moderation) helps prevent strokes, while keeping cancerous cells away. So replace your weekend beer with wine.
6. The 20-20-20 Rule
Always peeping into your laptop or phone screen? Give your eyes a break with the 20-20-20 rule. After every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and focus on something at least 20 feet away. It’s that simple!
7. Indulge in Olive Oil
Cook with olive oil, which is a lot healthier than regular cooking oil — it’s great for the heart and helps keep your blood pressure in check. Plus, olive oil is a great natural replacement for regular face creams to moisturise your skin.
8. Walk Straight
Walk with a hunchback and observe your body in the mirror. See how twisted it looks — with your neck and spine all squished? So make it a habit to walk straight and tall. Not only does it make you look great, it’s actually good for your physiology too.
9. Breath Easy
Sure, you’re breathing all the time. But if you really want to de-stress, spend 5 minutes at home or at work everyday to breathe deeply and consciously. Try these simple yoga breathing exercises.
10. Use Aroma as a Mood Enhancer
Finally, nothing’s quicker and easier than using aromatherapy to boost your mood.
Add a few drops of jasmine or lavender essential oils on a handkerchief — carry it along to keep your spirits high, while being more productive at work. You could also add a few drops to your pillowcase for better sleep. Here’s to healthy, happy vibes!
