Bombay’s Best Homemade Ice Creams

Ice creams so good, summer can take a hike

This summer’s hurting bad, and we’re looking for any excuse to cool down—not that we need an excuse to lap up a bowl of ice cream!

Ice cream is one such thing you can never have enough of. While your favourite neighbourhood ice cream shop might serve usual suspects like mango, strawberry and chocolate, we’ve dug up four homemade ice cream makers in Mumbai who offer the coolest best. Fancy rose-thandai, masala chai, or chocolate wasabi flavours? Indulge in these unique combinations, delivered right to your doorstep.

1. Bina’s Homemade Ice Cream

This ice cream maker really pushes the envelope with flavours like Chocolate Wasabi, Thai Red Rubies, Paan Choco Chips, Spicy Guava and Jalebi. And in case they do not have the one that you are thinking of, they are probably already busy formulating it as you read this! Bina’s is the most widespread homemade Ice cream delivery in Mumbai with four branches across the city.

Their 600ml tubs are priced at Rs 305, Rs 365 and Rs 425 depending on the flavour you choose. Apart from the flavours, we really like that they don’t use cream or preservatives in their recipe. Take a look at what Bina’s has to offer and we’re sure you’ll want to order right away.

2. Icekreamskee

This Juhu-based homemade ice cream delivery joint has more than twenty lip-smacking flavours under four categories, namely Specials, Nutties, Seasonal Fruits and All Time Favourites. Their signature flavour is Masala Chai, which is literally chai in the form of ice cream. The rich taste of their Gujarati chai masala might get you replacing your usual cuppa! Another favourite is the Lemon Iceberg. Ah! The name is enough to cool us down. They also have Avocado and Lime, a rare combo indeed. Their summer special includes Rose Pista with cooling sabza (falooda, anyone?).

Prices start at Rs 225 for a small tub. You can even customise all the flavours according to your preferred brand of sugar substitute—very thoughtful, indeed. Icekreamskee also plans to launch a completely vegan (read dairy free) line of ice creams soon.

3. Paleteria

Love popsicles? Try Paleteria, an 8-month-old venture that’s all about light and colourful ice creams. They serve a wide range of popsicles, from Watermelon Cooler to Oreo Cookies & Cream. Their pops are a treat to the eyes and the palate—take a look at their pretty lollies here.

Modestly priced at Rs 100, these pops are made from fresh and natural fruit juices and contain no preservatives or additional flavours. Every month, Paleteria comes up with a special flavour of the month which is not mentioned in their menu, so do remember to ask for it. The delivery is free for more than 20 pops; otherwise there’s a delivery charge of Rs 150.

4. Vegan Bites

As the name suggests, this one’s a healthier ice cream option. No cream, no preservatives, no sugar, and obviously no dairy! If you’re a dessert lover but are tired looking for vegan options, your search should end at Vegan Bites, Lower Parel. They deliver ice cream across Mumbai in boxes of one litre (starting at Rs 875) and half litre (starting at Rs 450). Their signature flavours include Saffron & Pistachio, Belgian Choco Almond and Raw Cacao with Cacao Nibs.

Since Vegan Bites doesn’t use dairy products, their ice cream is made of coconut milk or soy milk. When they say sugar free, they prefer not to use artificial sweeteners and instead, use natural sweeteners like maple syrup or jaggery. If you are allergic to a nut or want a particular dairy alternative to be used, they’re happy to customise.

These homemade ice creams have just made us summer ready, aren’t we grateful for that! Tell us what your favourite flavours are, in the comments section below.
