7 Buddha Bowls For The Soul

Health meets flavour in these one-bowl meals

Is it a dish from the land of Buddha? Is it something the Buddhists eat? Buddha Bowls started trending in India some time last year and they’re here to stay. Vibrant veggies and super foods artfully arranged in Insta-worthy bowls — what’s not to love?

However, there’s no official recipe to go by. A Buddha Bowl is simply a healthy bowl that’s so full, it resembles Buddha’s belly!

The key here is balance: the bowl must include at least one protein along with whole grains, fresh vegetables, and nuts and seeds, so you have a complete meal with a little bit of everything.

As restaurants in Mumbai put their own spin on the Buddha Bowl, there are so many yummy variants to try. These are our favourites:

1. Garlic Bean Buddha Bowl

Where: Saboro, Churchgate

Saboro does healthy, gluten-free, and vegan food and drinks for fitness buffs in SoBo.

The Garlic Bean Buddha Bowl from their new spring menu is clean and tasty — whole grain red rice with stir-fried greens beans and peanut crumble with spiced green chilli paste… mmm! So much nutrition packed into only 410 calories.

2. Asian Chilli Bowl

Where: Craving Salad, Bandra & Prabhadevi

The salad joint has a handful of healthy bowls on its menu.

Try the Mushroom & Sweet Potato Bowl lightly dressed in soy-ginger sauce, or go for the zingy Asian Chilli Bowl with chicken/tofu, brown rice, scrambled egg and veggies in schezwan sauce.

3. Buddha Ramen

Where: Buddha Bowl, Hill Road

The Bandra-based delivery joint does one-bowl meals in a variety of Asian flavours.

Their Buddha Ramen is a light, soupy preparation with homemade noodles, katsu chicken, sprouts, zucchini, carrots, and kale.

For something more tongue-tickling try the Som Tam Bowl — zesty raw papaya salad, grilled chicken, and sesame coated stir-fried noodles.

4. Quinoa Buddha Bowl

Where: Out of the Blue, Khar

If you’re too hungry for just salad, try the loaded Buddha Bowl at Out of the Blue. It’s a hearty portion of quinoa and leafy greens dressed in balsamic sambhal vinaigrette with cherry tomato, olives, and candied nuts topped with a poached egg.

5. New Soul Bowl

Where: The Village Shop, Bandra

This little Bandra cafe serves healthy food with vegan options aplenty. Their New Soul Bowl is wholesome and vegan, with shitake mushroom, pok choy, carrot, tofu and bamboo shoots in a soupy noodle broth.

6. Miso Ramen

Where: Kofuku, Bandra

Perhaps the most delicious Buddha Bowl on the list is actually a ramen bowl.

It is full to the brim with pork/chicken strips, fresh veggies, a hard boiled egg, and ramen in a scrumptious miso dashi broth. The portion is huge, easily shared between two.

7. Energy Bowl

Where: Kitchen Garden by Suzette, Bandra

A good mix of carb and protein, this one’s got bulgur, baby spinach, roasted beet, sweet potato, apple, and feta for a little healthy fat.

The flavour is well balanced with sweet honey, Dijon mustard, tangy balsamic, and spicy nuts and seeds.
