No matter which part of the city you’re in, a trip to Delhi is incomplete without indulging in its chaats. Loved by the locals and travellers alike, these chaats make the national capital a food capital as well!
But if you thought it stops at Dahi Bhalla and Chole Bhature, you couldn’t be more wrong. As a true-blue Delhiite, I give you my list of handpicked traditional chaats you absolutely cannot miss!
1. Moth Kachodi
The boss of all Delhi chaats? I think so. You can find it in every nook and corner of the city, and its taste will surely blow you away.
It’s a combination of good ol’ kachori topped with moth dal, chopped onions, chutney and spices. I suggest you add a spoonful of rice on top for an extra-yum experience.
Where: Civil Lines North Ridge, Moth Kachodi in Rajouri Market, Gera Moth Kachodi Patel Nagar, or the Moth Kachodi vendors at Pahar Ganj.
2. Daulat ki Chaat
Who said all chaats are spicy? Daulat ki Chaat is a sweet, buttery malai topped with nuts, equally tempting for any chaat lover. It is a winter speciality found in the heart of Delhi.
Where: Chaat stalls at Chandni Chowk.
3. Aloo Chaat
Now you may argue that Aloo Chaat is available in every corner of India, but the Delhi version surely takes the cake! The perfectly spicy and sour flavours mixed with boiled potatoes are sure to tickle your tastebuds.
Where: BTW (Bittu tikki wala) Pitam Pura, Raju Chaat Bhandar, Bharat Nagar, or Prabhu Chaat Bhandar Shahjahan Road.
4. Fruit Kulle
A healthy chaat? We’ll take it! Fruit Kulle is made of raw or boiled fruits, vegetables and sprouts tossed in spices and lemon juice.
Where: Bishan Singh Chaat Bhandar Chandni Chowk, Heera Lal Kulle Chaat at Chawri Bazaar, or Jugal Kishore Ramji Lal Chaat Wala.
5. Matra Chaat
Matra is a form of chickpeas that’s boiled and mashed to make a delectable chaat. Served with hot kulchas, it’s equally good as it is.
Where: Kulachi Ke Choley Kulche Wala at Ashok Vihar, Matra Chaat vendors at Gaffar Market, Lotan kulche wala, or the Kulche Wala outside Arts Faculty.
6. Samosa Chaat
Coming to the more popular chaats now, this one is all about deep-fried samosas with the yummiest potato filling. With an accompaniment of aloo jhol or chole and curd, this chat is simply irresistible.
Where: Kumar samosa wala, Moti Nagar, or Bengali Market.
Call it Pani Puri or Puchka, but Dilliwale call it Golgappe. Don’t miss our local version of these crisp puris filled with minty liquid goodness.
Where: Bengali Market, Vaishno Chaat Bhandar Kamla Nagar, Chotey Lal Chaat Bhandar at Chandni Chowk, UPSC Chaat Wala, or the vendor opposite Hansraj Hostel.
8. Aloo Tikki
Who doesn’t love Aloo Tikki, right? They say you don’t get tikkis like the Dilli ones anywhere else in India, and I’d have to agree!
Savour them with varieties of chutneys, chole or yogurt, and it will simply explode your tastebuds.
9. Bhalla Papdi
Bhalla Papdi is a scrumptious mix of yogurt and a variety of chutneys on top of a vada similar to Dahi Vada. It’s sweet, spicy, tangy and yum.
Where: BTW (Bittu Tikki Wala) Pitam Pura, Raju Chaat Bhandar Bharat Nagar, Natraj Chaat Wala, Chandni Chowk, UPSC Chaat Wala, Atul Chaat Corner, Rajouri Market.
10. Pav Bhaji
Nothing comes close to Mumbai Pav Bhaji, but you gotta try the spicy, buttery Dilli version too.
Where: Imly – various outlets, Arjun Pav Bhaji Model Town, Kumar Pav Bhaji Krishna Nagar, or Jhakkas Pav Bhaji at Rohini.
