New Year Goals: Make Your 2018 Fitness Resolution Stick

3 fitness experts share tips to help you stick to your goals this year

With 2018 now well upon us, it’s that time of the year when we’re all set to carve new milestones for ourselves. As is the case with most of us, we start with great enthusiasm but find it fizzling out with each passing day. Sounds familiar?

Making resolutions is easy — sticking to them is that much harder. This holds true for any resolution that involves kicking a bad habit or inculcating a good one.

Fitness is perhaps the single most common resolution. However, we’re all too well-versed with the eternal battle between wanting to get fit, and our love for food and comfort. As a result, “screw it” and “I’ll start tomorrow” soon find their way into our vocabulary!

But this year, tell yourself you won’t give up — that you’ll actually chase your fitness goals to the finish. To help you stick to your resolution, we’ve got 3 fitness experts to share real tips and tell us what’s really worked for them in the past.

Get with the Grind

“There’s never a lack of external motivation — only action! You will always find an abundance of inspiring IG fitness experts who’ll get your fitness motor humming. The only thing between you and them is the grind and the determination to take action,” says Sanjay Shah (21, Ahmedabad), who’s been practicing fitness for a year to great effect.

Summing up, it’s never going to be fun, so make a daily plan and stick to it, whether it’s 2 minutes or 20,” he adds.

We can testify to this; fitness is like education. The grind (i.e. school for education, and hitting the gym for fitness) is never easy or exciting, but the results make it all worth it. As celebrity fitness trainer Jillian Michaels puts it, “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable!”

Make it a Custom Fit

A gym trainer in Mumbai, Eric Fernandez (33) says, “Fitness is not a one-size-fits-all concept.”

He believes you gotta find a plan that will yield the best results for your body type. “Every body (literally) is different after all. This will get you results much faster than anticipated, and seeing results is what makes the grind exciting! Sustaining it is your job.”

However, “Don’t make your own fitness plan, take expert advice,” he adds.

Take Responsibility 

Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and millennials have access to tons of fitness options if they really want to take it up. “Everything is in the palm of your hands,” says Sonia Varma (28, Mumbai), an aspiring dietician and fitness consultant.

“DIY fitness? There are apps for that. Need an expert? There are apps for that. How about dietary consultation? There are resources for that as well. Today’s millennials have friends to get fit with, and a fitness maestro to walk you through your journey if you so desire. All the things you need are around you; you just need to take responsibility for the change.”

Indeed, there’s no excuse for the modern millennial. The only thing standing in the way of you and your fittest self is — you. So find an expert, get a fitness buddy, build a kickass fitness plan together and get cracking!
