Imagine cleaning your face with oil. Not soap or cleanser, but oil. Oil cleansing, as its officially called, is a real thing, and it seems to have generated glowing reviews too.

Oil Cleansing….What?

Even though it may sound preposterous, using natural oils to clean the skin lightly is a clever and effective method. The primary idea is to use oils in different proportions to bathe the skin and organically balance the skin’s natural oils. The result? The skin is much more nourished, moisturised and looks healthier compared to using soaps or face wash.

The Process

Take one teaspoon of organic coconut or sesame oil and massage into the skin with the tip of your fingers for 3 min. Then take a hot towel and place it on your skin so the pores open up. Post which wipe your skin with the hot towel thoroughly to remove any extra traces of oil. That’s it. You don’t need a beautician; neither do you have to spend hours and money at a salon.

Expert Speak

We chatted with dermatologist Manish Tawle about Oil Cleansing and its effectiveness. “Cleaning the face with oil can dissolve impurities, clear the pores, and nourish the skin. The steam will open your pores, allowing the oil to be easily removed. However, I recommend that you try this method once or twice a week since the humidity in the country is high and thus, can lead to breakouts if not used judiciously“.

Fact Check

The concept of oil cleansing is based on a simple principle of chemistry, which is “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils.

Nirja Patel is a fan of the oil cleansing method and follows the procedure three times a week. “By using the right oil, you can disinfect your pores and remove bacteria naturally. The best part is, the process actually heals the skin and the acne marks I had, have diminished effectively“.

The Real Deal

If done with the right oil and consistently, oil cleaning is known to help combat issues like dry or sensitive skin, whiteheads, blackheads and other mild issues. It is not a solution for serious skin ailments though, and you should see the doctor for the same.

If you are not sure what kind of oil to use, many new companies are making oils for specific skin types. Check out the list of the best ones available in the market here.
