It’s Not That Un-Common

Before we tell the reasons for your bed thrashing, it’s important that you realise that Insomnia is quite common these days. And that’s why it’s so dangerous. Dr Asha Patyal says that lack of sleep can cause serious medical issues like heart problems. She adds, “Just like a nutritious diet, sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining physical and mental health”.

Your Mind Refuses to Shut Down

Thinking about the argument with a friend or finishing that important task at work could be the culprit here. Switching off the mind is not an easy task, but it’s a crucial one especially if you care about sleep. Continuous thoughts are the foremost reasons for anxiety which in turn makes you move in and out even in a light stage of sleep.

Solution: Maintain a journal and before going to bed, write down your worries, concerns and everything else bothering you. This way, your worries of the day will be purged and your mind, ready to shut down for the night.

Dust Mites in Your Pillow

Sometimes the reason is very simple, such as dust mites. If you don’t remember when you last changed and cleaned your pillow, then its time probably crawling with dust mites which are keeping you up. Did you know that dust mites cause allergies (such as congestion) which actually induce insomnia?

Solution: Wish your pillows and covers every month and it’s probably wise to invest in anti- allergen pillow if you’re extra sensitive.

You Can’t Stay Away from Your Gadget

This should probably the first and only reason for many of us. Do you sleep with your phone next to your pillow? How about watching a quick episode of Narcos on Netflix before passing out? If your answer is yes, then you know why you can’t sleep. The mind needs 30 min before it can start to switch off and your preference of online entertainment doesn’t allow it. Result: You are watching the fan at 3 am.

Solution: Make it a rule to not surf online or watch TV 30 min before you want to sleep. Instead, try some light stretching and breathing exercises to relax your body and mind.
