As usual, as dreaded, Delhi seems poised to break its own record. We’re expecting a whopping 50 degrees this summer if April was anything to go by. People are going to be crankier (than usual, yes), birds are going to start sweating mid-air (again), and all the rooftop restaurants of the city will dive into losses.

So where should you go if you can’t stand your friend’s house or that underground grooving party full of too many sweaty bodies? Thankfully, as temperatures and tempers fail, Delhi still manages to keep its cultural scene alive. Below are our picks to escape into as summer takes over the capital.

300 x 250

Workshops & Screenings

India Habitat Centre can be relied on for artistic entertainment no matter what season the city is stressing through. Lined up for May are weekend art workshops, a play based on Manto’s Toba Tek Singh, a solo photography exhibition, stand up comedy and, best of all – the Habitat Film Festival from May 19 – 28.

Music Recitals

India International Centre is another cultural hotbed of Delhi. They have sarod recitals of Banaras Gharana, Odissi and Bharatnatyam recitals, film screenings, book discussion groups and even a flamenco appreciation evening lined up for May and June.

Dream(y) Yoga

Want some luxury packaged with acceptable amounts of spirituality? Check into Zorba the Buddha. They have some pretty calming stuff planned for the hot days ahead – Healing Through Tibetan Singing Bowls, Psychic Dream Yoga, Hot Solutions For Cool Women (I checked, it’s about hormonal changes yo), and a group healing session for Past Life Regression. Phew!

Photo Exhibitions

It’s easy to spend a while at the Tasveer Gallery, perhaps because photography always seems more open to interpretation than other visual arts (smaller margin of error too!). Mahesh Shantaram’s The African Portraits is the one we are looking forward to in June, before which in May there is Serena Chopra’s beautiful B&W snapshots titled Bhutan Echoes.

Plays & More Plays

Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts is the ultimate space for all things theatre – pure theatre. A look at their events calendar will show you 19 different plays in May itself. And then in June begins their much-awaited Summer Theatre Festival. Every summer evening you can attend a selected play – they feature both originals as well as adaptations – and then grab a cooling lassi at their popular in-house canteen.
