As a travel revolution takes over, several hostels have popped up in India in the last decade or so, making it a sought-after destination for budget travellers and backpackers, both, Indian and non-Indian.

Travellers, especially millennials, are not always looking for big resorts with private beaches. Instead, they want to feel connected to a place, meet new people, and share stories with each other (without having to burn a hole in the pocket).

Backpacker hostels and B&Bs are an ideal accommodation for these wanderlust souls. Though humble in their shared amenities, they are rich in experiences, and easy on the pockets.

So if you’re planning a backpacking trip anytime soon, here are some great options to choose from: (in no particular order)

1. Zostel, multiple locations

Zostel has a chain of cool hostels across India, like Coorg, Varanasi, Goa, and Ooty, but we’re digging the one at Bir.

Camp out on a starry night in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh while you stay here. Zostel Bir also happens to be the only paragliding hostel in the area.

2. Roadhouse Hostel, Jaipur

When you walk into the Roadhouse Hostel, you’ll see why the name is so fitting.

The interior design is full of fascinating graffiti and lyrics by the legendary 60s band, The Doors (the hostel is named after their famous song, Roadhouse Blues). Travellers love the chill vibe and the gaming rooms here.

3. Bunk Stay, Rishikesh

At a humble Rs 400 a night, reviewers have only had great things to say about their time at Bunk Stay. Expect to make a lot of friends here!

4. Stops Hostel, Varanasi

Stops Hostels is another great chain of backpacker accommodations across India. Besides an affordable stay and great food, they’ll be happy to organise walking tours with a fun community of travellers.

5. By the Way, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

By the Way is not exactly a hostel and the luxuries are limited. But you’re sure to find clean and well-maintained accommodation here. At Rs 250 a head, what more could you ask for?

6. Electric Cats Bed & Breakfast, Bangalore

Electric Cats is a B&B located in a great area, Indiranagar, in Bangalore. At Rs 500 a night, they offer accommodation and serve up breakfast to fuel your travels for the day.

7. Jugaad Hostel, New Delhi

If you’re in the mood to explore the country’s capital on a shoestring budget, the Jugaad Hostel has you covered with a simple shared space. Expect a warm welcome and helpful hosts.

8. Ledeg Ecology Hostel, Leh

If you’re wondering what an ecology hostel is, it’s an eco-friendly and sustainable development model that relies on renewable energy, safe waste management, and sustainable agriculture.

When you visit Ledeg Ecology Hostel, you’ll get to learn a lot about sustainable living, and if you’re interested, you can always get involved and support one of their innumerable projects.

9. Backpacker Panda, Pune

Situated in the heart of Pune city (Koregaon Park), this hostel is perfect for those who want to get to know the local culture and make new friends. The quirky interior design is a plus. They also have branches elsewhere in India.

10. Bricks & Bamboo Hostel, Anjuna, Goa

Tucked away on a small road behind Monty’s, Bricks & Bamboo is a simple, clean space to crash after a beach party. The owners are nice and friendly, always ready to help with recommendations on local food, scooter rentals etc.
